Interbike to boost BMX visibility

Interbike returns to Las Vegas in September with a larger BMX presence

 

The bicycle industry tradeshow, Interbike, will return to Las Vegas, Nev., on Sept. 19-21. Although BMX has been a part of the trade show since the 1980s, on Tuesday, Interbike announced a few new initiatives to strengthen the BMX representation at this fall’s show. Trade show organizers cite the upcoming London Olympics — BMX racing’s second-ever Olympic appearance, after being introduced at the 2008 Games in Beijing — as one of the reasons for BMX’s increased visibility at the show.

 

As in years past, there will be a section of the convention center designated specifically for BMX manufacturers, called BMX Zone. But new this year are educational seminars aimed at helping retailers learn more about the category, a new advisory panel of BMX company executives, a BMX history area, and a new alliance with the Ride BMX NORA Cup Awards.

 

“BMX has such an important history within our industry, and with the category making its second appearance at the Olympics this year, the sport is growing,” Pat Hus, Interbike’s managing director, said in a release. “We wanted to get the leaders in the segment together to help us understand what we as a business can do to help them get the most out of their experience at Interbike. We’ve had some great discussions since forming the advisory panel, and with their guidance I’m confident that we’re moving in the right direction.”

 

The history station, called Generations of Freestyle, will be not be affiliated with a specific brand and will showcase the history of many companies within the BMX industry. It’s being design by industry veteran Mark Losey, who’s currently the US BMX Freestyle Manager for Nike.

 

“Freestyle has incredibly deep roots within BMX, and I’m stoked to work with Interbike to celebrate our history,” Losey said. “We’re creating an in-depth display/experience featuring products from as many of the companies that helped create and grow our culture as possible. The history of our sport is filled with diverse brands and personalities, and that’s what we want to celebrate at Interbike.”
